WELCOMELyrix Studios is the work space of Mary Richardson Trethewey. Visitors who browse the website will see artwork using various processes and media: monotypes, watermedia and oil paintings, mixed media drawings, and digitally enhanced photographs. The most recent work is oil on paper, canvas, or cradled hardboard panels. ABOUT THE ARTISTIt was in college over 40 years ago that I first began to infuse visual ideas with the character of the medium. Today, the medium continues as a full partner in the completed statement. My imagery is abstract and symbolic. It reflects the journey, playfulness, and place. Color, texture, and form provide the energy and set the mood while the aim is a mark of truth which communicates at a fundamental level. Born in Pasadena, California, I studied art at California State University at Northridge, where I received a masters in 1978. I have taught ceramics and design at CSUN and design in the Environmental Design Department at Cal Poly, Pomona. Currently, I live in a house in the woods just outside of Nevada City with my husband, cat, and two dogs. ABOUT THE WORKMonotypes are the product of a singular event which results in one-of-a-kind artwork. Typically, ink is drawn, rolled or painted on a plate and transferred from plate to paper. Often to achieve the final image, the inked plate is reworked and printed on the same piece of paper in several layers. The monotypes shown here are made on acid free paper with oil-based inks and are grouped with other oils in the category of Oil Media. Oil paintings are either on cradled hardboard, canvas, or acid free paper. The medium may be applied with a brush (as with traditional oils), drawn with an oil bar, or both. An oil bar is a paint stick made of pigment, oil, and wax. Photographics are digital images which have been modified using Adobe Photoshop. The images are a product of curiosity and play and have a role in developing ideas for other work. Recent work is oil media (oil paints and/or oil sticks) on paper, canvas, or cradled hardboard. Watermedia refers to the use of transparent watercolor, inks, raw pigments, or acrylic paint. All watermedia are on acid-free paper. Paper may be prepared with gesso. M.
